"On International Women's Day I heard a scary statistic: only 5% of music producers are female.
For this playlist I’ve decided to highlight some of my favourite, under-represented womxn
producers. Each of these artists have really inspired my own production in different ways. The
playlist is groovy yet minimal; I tried to select tracks that embodied the gentle nature of a
woman’s touch. There’s also some beautiful poetry within these tracks, each telling a different
story of womanhood, from Stella Donnelly’s hauntingly sweet ‘Boy’s Will be Boys’ to Cooly G’s
broken-beat serenade ‘Like a Woman Should’. I’m proud to support and showcase each of
these incredible producers; an ethnically and demographically diverse crowd bound together
by the wonderful World Wide Web. Bandcamp is the most ethical online music marketplace,

I am such a sucker for ambient and pretty textures and sounds, which I feel are pretty ubiquitous across these tracks I've selected. Music for me, like most people, is the main way I escape reality, so the dance music I feel most connected to always exhibits atmospheric and euphoric/nostalgic/melancholic emotions. All of these tracks are incredible in their own right. I've been OBSESSED with Memphis LK's "Letters In Concrete", which is a beautiful UKG-infused number that feels like a warm hug on your soul. I would probably listen to this playlist on the way home from the club at 6am. Or on top of a really tall hill looking over Melbourne on a stormy Winter night.

These tracks feel nostalgic, but I’m not really sure what for. Some trigger longing for a time in my past that I’m not so familiar with, yet somehow feel connected to via these sounds. Others make me nostalgic for a future that lives strongly in disparate communities but struggle to make sense in a broader context. 2020 may have been a rough year for dance
music in Naarm/Melbourne, pretty much devoid of parties and clubs. However,
there’s been no shortage of amazing releases put out by locals. It’s been
inspiring to see such quality output from the local electronic music community.
This list is dedicated to highlighting some of my favourite releases this year
from Naarm/Melbourne producers. As we slowly emerge from lockdown here, here’s
to hoping they get the airtime they deserve on proper sound systems once
dancefloors return.
&nbsp;
You’ll find a variety of sounds in this list,
including trippy IDM, trance, bass, house and deep, atmospheric, dubby tech
sounds championed so well by local producers like Pugilist, iota, LOIF and
Third Space. I’ve also included 3 V/As released by local crews this year, all
of which also showcase some fantastic, diverse sounds from local producers. A
few tracks among these releases are in the mix I put together for Douglas
Street.

First on the list is MAC Address, who you can
subscribe to for $5 a month on bandcamp and get his whole back catalogue of
tracks as well as new tracks he releases monthly. I’d highly recommend it as
well as all the other releases on this list. Enjoy!
